Rebuilding Levees

April 12, 2010

I have had a few calls about producers planning to rebuild levees. This is an inevitable task that must be tackled regularly by many.

The main problem that can occur with rebuilding levees is the compaction of crawfish burrows. When this happens, there is a probablility that crawfish will be lost because they tend to burrow in the side of levees when the water levels go down this time of year. If you plan to do extensive work on levees, it may be a better idea to do some of the levees and not all of them at the same time to reduce the chance of crop loss. However, you could always restock if you wanted to completely rebuild the levee system. Just keep in mind that the crawfish are in those levees and compacting them could result in some crop loss.
